Sales Management Jobs: What They Are & How To Get Them

Do you have a way with words, and a motivational gift? Then sales management jobs may be right up your alley.

Working in sales is usually one of the best ideas that you can have if you want to work in a field like retail, because they are positions that you can work for a lifetime.  Plus they can pay fantastically well if you’re in the right area of work, because this is really a part of life where you’re able to control what you’re going to make to some degree.  However, getting right into sales management jobs usually isn’t possible, and it’s going to take some work on your part to be able to crack that mold and really rise above the regular sales levels.

But with the right preparation and understanding of what’s going to be expected of you, you’ll be sure to succeed. It will take some dedication however, and you’re going to find that you do need to commit fully to your career choice if you want to be able to pursue things as far as you can take them.  But so long as you’re serious about a career in sales management jobs, you’ll find that there’s always plenty of opportunity, which is something that not a lot of other type of careers are able to say.

1) What do sales managers do exactly?

This is a pretty varied question, just as it would be in just about any other type of field as well.  But basically, what you will find that sales management jobs entail is actually managing the sales department, or some sales department in different ways.  Here are a few breakdowns of the most common jobs:

-General sales jobs manager

This is where you literally manage the sales floor, and the salespeople that operate on a daily basis.  You want to look at their numbers, and make sure everybody is achieving goals, and then help those that aren’t with your industry specific expertise.  These usually require a lot of experience at the lower level, so that you can show that you’ve actually done the sales work necessary to understand your employees, so that you can guide them through the process more easily.

-Sales training jobs

This is a position by which you’re actually responsible for training other managers and staff, so that they can become the types of sellers that your company wants to employ.  These are positions that are always needed, and that companies always want to fill because of how important they are to the workforce.  But this does require a ton of experience, to show that you’re proven to know what works and what doesn’t when it comes to sales.

-Sales executive jobs

This is where you can ply your trade at the highest levels of the industry.  These types of sales management jobs are where you actually control entire sales departments for a  corporation, and make sure that figures are on schedule to make monthly projections.   There’s very little actual selling here, and it’s more of a complete administrative type of position.

2) What type of an education do you need?

For most of the top sales management jobs, you’re going to need a pretty involve education, and you’re actually going to want to go to at least the bachelor’s degree level, with a business degree. There are also sales specific degrees that you can get from most accredited colleges as well, and they are worth pursuing if you’re really serious about getting a job within the industry.  Anything that you can do to further your education and understanding is always going to be a good thing when it comes to getting the job in the end.

3) What is the salary potential?

A big key to determining whether or not a job is the right path for you, is deciding upon which opportunities are going to be the most fruitful. At the executive level of sales management jobs you can expect to make at least six figures every time.  But lower positions like training managers or even with just standard management, you can expect roundabouts $60,000 and more.  But in most sales management careers the salary can differ greatly, so you can’t take one example as the definitive answer of your potential to make money with any one job.
