Food industry jobs can take the form of many position types. Here are seven roles that all offer great incentives over the course of a career.

The food industry is a large employer and it covers a great number of occupations. These can be set in a various locations from factories to laboratories, hotels restaurants and commercial food processing facilities. This provides many food industry jobs to specialize in, with the following being a few of those to consider.

Food Safety Consultant

A food safety consultant can work with a variety of companies in the food industry, from those that retail food to restaurants, food manufacturers and storage warehouses. The role they play is in providing advice and recommendations with regard to food safety and they can undertake a variety of tasks. They can work on disease prevention by undertaking food safety check-ups and audits of locations where food is stored, sold or prepared. This can involve the provision of advice on complying with relevant food safety regulations. They can also become involved when problems occur by undertaking liaison with local, states and federal food safety inspectors, and evaluating problems to provide recommendations to improve future operations.

Food Process Engineer

Food processing can be done on an industrial scale, and a food process engineer is typically involved in the planning, design and construction of plant and equipment used for this purpose. They can be involved at the start-up stage of a food processing facility and have a role in ensuring that it is designed and installed correctly, and works as planned. Many are also employed in the running of food processing plants and will be responsible for the operation of the equipment to make sure a facility runs smoothly and without problems. Preparation and cooking is a key part of the food industry and can be carried out at restaurants, cafes and other food service locations. For those that enjoy cooking, an occupation to consider is a chef. These are typically responsible for the day to day operations of a kitchen in a food service establishment and may work on their own in smaller locations, or be responsible for a variety of kitchen staff who assist them in larger restaurants. Chefs generally have the overall responsibility for a kitchen and will carry out tasks such as developing recipes, planning menus, ordering ingredients and preparing and cooking food.


Another option for food industry jobs that specializes in preparing and cooking food is a baker. They are involved in the production of bread, cakes, pastries and other baked goods, with many working in large commercial bakeries that produce their products on an industrial scale. However, options are also available in other locations such as department stores, restaurants and specialty bakery goods stores, where work is carried out on a smaller scale.

Food Science Technician

Food science technicians are typically employed in a laboratory setting, to undertake research, development and testing work. Many are located in educational facilities, although others are employed by food manufacturing companies. The work they do typically involves tasks such as conducting tests on manufactured food and drinks to ensure that these comply with the relevant standards and regulations. They also have a role in the research and development of new food and drink products, as well as additives and preservatives used in the food industry, to ensure these comply with legislation and are safe for consumption.

Food Services Manager

A food services manager is the member of staff responsible for overseeing the running of food service establishments, such as restaurants. They control the day-to-day operations of the establishment and this can involve a range of tasks, including coordinating between front and back of house operations, organizing the ordering of ingredients and supplies, ensuring the proper upkeep, cleaning and maintenance of a restaurant and dealing with customer enquiries and complaints. They can typically work in a range of locations from fast food joints to full service restaurants and hotels.
