1) Most security guard services come with a fair amount of risk.

Because you can be guarding some dangerous areas, or also because you can be guarding some expensive property or items, you can become a target for anyone trying to exploit what you’re guarding.  Typically guards are the first target, and not everyone is always particularly well trained, so it can become extremely dangerous as you’re basically putting yourself in the line of fire.

This is especially true of jobs where armed security guards are often used.  For these types of jobs you’re going to find that you’re at a high risk of danger anyway, but it’s heighten just that much by the fact that there are so many guns around you in the hands of fellow employees.

2) Despite advancement opportunities, entry level jobs don’t pay as well.

You’re going to find that your hourly rate for most security guard jobs is not what you would want it to be, and in many cases you can get better pay working at a retail store.  While the work is more consistent, and you can be sure that you have some level of actual job security, you’re also going to find that it’s going to take some time and a lot of work to really get to the point where you’re going to be making a great salary.

3) There’s a lot of paperwork.

While this may not be what you expected, a big facet of being in security guard jobs is that you have to do a ton of paperwork.  You’re always reporting on events, and anytime something happens you can be sure that you’ll have a few days to go through, and that’s not really a whole lot of fun for anyone, so be prepared.
