Travel Agent Jobs: A Day In The Life

Before jumping straight into travel agent jobs, understanding a day in the life of one may help you to determine whether this career choice is right for you.


When you’re trying to decide what type of a career or what types of jobs that you want to go with, what you really need to think about is what they really entail. It’s not so much about preparing for your career, as actually figuring out what your career is going to demand, when you’re trying to determine your path. This way, you can figure out just what is going to be the most rewarding as well as challenging to you, so that you can be sure your career offers you about all the enjoyment you could want. With travel agent jobs really entail can vary from position to position, but there are plenty of things that you’re expected to do.

Basically, this is a job where you want to help people have a action of a lifetime, and you want them to be able to do so under budget. This is really important, so that you can retain customers, and keep satisfaction high. If you don’t really do your all to serve the customer, you’re going to find that you’re not going to be able to keep very many coming back. If you can’t do that, you’re going to find yourself out of a job pretty quick in the end.

But essentially, you can expect to be doing these sorts of things when you are in the position with any types of travel agent careers:

1) Have the expertise to answer customers questions.

The number one thing that you’re going to find this sort of a job entails, is answering the questions of your customers. For that reason, you have to know a lot about travel and tourism in general. That’s why you want to take a college course, or even go for a degree in tourism. This way, you have everything you need right in your brain to provide customers with the expert insight that they really need to plan a trip.

2) Giving advice on destinations.

This is another really important one, and is why you need to know a lot about travel in general. You have to know a lot about the top destinations around the world, so that you can give advice as to what to expect, but also so that you can suggest them. If someone gives you a budget range, and says they want a romantic vacation, you need to be able to name off some destinations offering just what they want, within the area that they want to be able to travel.

3) Be prepared to plan literally everything.

You have to be a good researcher to be a travel agent, because you have to book everything from hotels, to transportation, and even rental cars and activities. That means being able to spot reputable companies, and ensuring they are going to come through for your customer. Anybody that does not come through once the customer is at the location, is only going to reflect negatively on you most of all.

4) You’re going to be asked a lot of questions about the weather as well.

Most travel agent jobs also require that you keep up on major storms and travel trends, so that you can spot where the market is going, or where people are traveling and when. This way, you can be sure that you’re able to keep track of what’s going on, so that you can advise people on the best time to travel to avoid things like hurricanes, rainy seasons, and anything else of the sort.

5) Develop friends in the industry to get great rates.

A big part of your successes determine on the friends you make in the industry. That means hotels, resorts and other places of the like. If you can make friends by pushing customers to stay there more and more, you can ensure that they respond by giving you exclusive deals, as well as great discounts that can ensure customers really want to travel there, which benefits you both.

6) The salary that comes along with the job.

But of course, you also want to be prepared for the salary that comes with travel agent jobs. Most typically the median amount falls around $30,000. But there’s a ton of potential to make well over that, if you’re smart. So long as you’re in the right part of the country that has a lot of travel business, you can be sure that you’re making well more than enough
